Find your flare, seat the pads
Feel along your lower ribs for the point that juts out furthest, then sit the angled pads flush over it.
STEP 02
Strap it, then dial the pressure
Close the straps around your lower ribs, not your waist, then tighten the pads to firm, even pressure.

The Father of Orthopedics writes it down
In 1741 Nicolas Andry, the man who coined the word orthopedics, published L’orthopédie ou l’art de prévenir et de corriger dans les enfants, les difformités du corps.

Over 150 years later in 1892, German surgeon Julius Wolff expanded on Andry’s observations and published The Law of Bone Remodelling.

He started with a Pectus Carinatum patient. He created a custom brace that applied pressure directly to the protruding chest.

A different target: the flared lower ribs
In 1987, Dr. Haje adapted his method for pectus excavatum, but with a different approach. Instead of pressing on the sternum, he targeted the lower flaring ribs.
The science is simple:

Dr. Sydney Haje proved this works. He took these orthopedic principles and created a specific bracing method for pectus deformities, combining external force from the brace with internal pressure from breathing exercises.
The results? All 1,824 patients in his 2006 study successfully corrected their chest deformities with bracing.

Orthopedic approach to pectus deformities: 32 years of studies
Disturbances in the growth of the sternum and costal arches, as well as biomechanical factors related to the pathogenesis of pectus deformities, demonstrate how these deformities are correlated to orthopaedics.
STUDY 02
Localized pectus excavatum treated with brace and exercise: long term results of a Brazilian technique
Results: Treatment was successful in 58% of patients, however, when exercises were performed and the brace was used regularly by patients with flexible deformities, the rate increased to 83%.
STUDY 03
Broad Pectus Excavatum Treatment: Long Term Results of a Brazilian Technique
Results: Forty-eight percent of patients showed good results. With regular use of orthoses and performance of exercises, this rate increased to 70%.
STUDY 04
Overcorrection during treatment of pectus deformities with DCC orthoses: experience in 17 cases
Overcorrection of pectus excavatum during a conservative treatment is something new, as there is a general belief that the simple improvement of an excavatum deformity would be impossible without surgery.
The gradual external effect of a DCC II orthosis on the flaring of the inferior ribs and the increase in the intrathoracic pressure provoked by the exercises provide an effective internal pressure on the depressed central area.

Conclusion: Compressive orthotic bracing is a successful method of treatment of pectus carinatum.
STUDY 13
Does physiotherapy applied in conjunction with compression brace treatment in patients with pectus carinatum have efficacy? A preliminary randomized-controlled study
Conclusion: Owing to the satisfaction and additional benefits observed in the physiotherapy group, we think that a proper cardiopulmonary and musculoskeletal exercise program should be applied concurrently with brace treatment for patients with PC deformity.

Conclusions: These data show that brace therapy can be considered a valuable treatment option to correct pectus carinatum in patients with a flexible thorax.

The Calgary protocol for bracing of pectus carinatum: a preliminary report
In patients completing initial treatment, the pectus carinatum protrusion (pre 22 +/- 6 vs post 6.0 +/- 6.2) and subjective appearance (change + 1.8+/-0.4) showed a significant improvement (P < .001 for both) with no change in exercise tolerance.

Results: Among those who were offered bracing and had adequate follow-up (n = 32), the success rate (full correction or improvement) was 90.6%.

Results: There was successful sustained reduction of the deformity in 244 patients with high reported rates of concordance (98%) and satisfaction (94%). Patients experienced a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression and had improved body satisfaction.
